HANINA | HOMESICK

A collection of background paintings and illustrations I did for the University of Michigan-funded animated short film, Hanina (which translates into English as “Homesick”). Hanina tells the story of the forced displacement of the Nubian people from their homeland due to flooding from the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. Set against a new recording of the great Nubian musician Sayid' Gayer’s iconic displacement song, “Wa Hanina,” this film is a story of memory, family, and longing for a homeland that no longer exists.
